Barbara AI began with a simple observation: most chat feels like a transaction, and almost none of it feels like company.
The project exists to write characters worth returning to. Each companion is drafted as a person on paper first, with a background, a set of habits, a sense of humour and a way of handling silence. Only once that voice is stable does the character join the roster.
What we make
A small cast, written slowly. We would rather publish five companions with distinct voices than fifty that blur together. Every profile on Barbara AI is long-form because a paragraph of description cannot carry a personality, and because knowing who you are talking to changes how you talk.
How we write
Every character is invented. Names are drawn from a mix of cultures and deliberately uncommon, so no companion reads as a stand-in for a public figure or someone you know. Portraits are generated artwork in an editorial style, never photographs of real people.
Tone
Conversations on Barbara AI stay tasteful. The experience is written for adults, and the writing aims for warmth rather than provocation: the register of a long letter, a slow dinner or a walk with someone who listens well.
